Undergraduate opportunities at The Australian National University

The ARC Centre of Excellence for the Weather of the 21st Century explores how Australia’s weather is being reshaped by climate change. We offer highly competitive scholarships intended to provide undergraduate students from Australian universities with an introduction to cutting-edge climate and weather change science under the supervision of our Investigators and Researchers.

Students should be in their second, third, or post-honours year and interested in pursuing honours or a postgraduate degree in climate or weather change science. At ANU, scholarship projects may either run on a full-time basis over the summer or winter breaks, or part-time for the equivalent of six weeks fulltime work throughout the academic year. The scholarships are valued at $5,000.

Projects cover a wide range of approaches to climate and weather change, including laboratory experiments, numerical simulations, observational analyses, and theoretical methods, subject to supervisor availability.

Possible avenues include:

• – the fundamental dynamics of atmospheric planetary waves,
• – interactions between the land surface and atmosphere,
• – feedbacks between weather systems and future droughts,
• – the changing nature of weather and weather extremes,
• – air-sea coupling processes,
• – wind-driven interfacial waves as a model for largescale climate variability.

Requirements include a general familiarity with climate science programming (e.g., python, NetCDF, etc.), a willingness to test hypotheses by developing, running, and analysing controlled experiments, and a curiosity about Earth’s climate and weather systems.
