Bio

Doug is a climate scientist who analyses climate data to help address complex societal challenges, including the transition to Net Zero and enhancing resilience to natural hazards. His research centres around the impacts posed to society, the economy and the environment from climate variability and changes in the behaviour of weather and climate extremes. He specialises in “compound events”, which describe the interaction of multiple climate hazards or drivers leading to an impact. He analyses compound events through the lens of renewable energy systems, global wildfire risk, crop failures and agricultural trade, and climate forecasting on weekly to decadal time scales. Doug completed his PhD in 2019 at Newcastle University in the UK. He worked as a Research Fellow at CSIRO between 2019 and 2022 and was part of the Australian Climate Service, a national, multi-agency climate resilience program. Doug joined the ARC Centre of Excellence for 21st Century Weather in 2025.
